TRUTH XIAO PREVAIL

HomeWE DEMAND TRUTH, JUSTICE, AND TRANSPARENCY FROM THE LEADERSHIP OF THE DEPARTMENT OF HISTORYMar 19, 2008
THIS IS A STUDENT-INITIATED SITE, MR. CHUA HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE CREATION OF THIS SITE WHATSOEVER.

This is a site for family, friends, and students of Mr. Michael Charleston "XIAO" Briones Chua, whose application for renewal as instructor in the Department of History of the University of the Philippines Diliman was UNJUSTLY DENIED, WITHOUT JUST CAUSE NOR DUE PROCESS, and WITHOUT AN IOTA OF TRANSPARENCY AND DECORUM. We, concerned students of the University of the Philippines, DEMAND FOR TRUTH, JUSTICE, AND TRANSPARENCY from the leadership of the faculty of the DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY.

Our Kas 199 (Thesis) professor always says, “Take a stand!” And I ask myself… “No matter how late?”

It was exactly one year ago, on March 18, 2008 when a friend of mine and a beloved professor of many, Sir Michael “Xiao” Chua learned through a written letter that his renewal in the Department of History was denied. To recall, posters were pasted all throughout the university calling for due process; that was initiated by his students, who firmly believed and stood by him. I envy them. They were younger but they knew their stand and took it.

It has been a year and all that happened seem to have been forgotten. It is not only this particular case that bothers me, but the repeatability of what was done. What if it happens again? When gradually, the best professors that we have in this university are the ones who are unjustly forced out. This is the premier university and we deserve premier professors.

March 18, 2008 will just be an ordinary date for most of us but for myself, it will be a constant reminder to have courage to stand for what is right; for UP, it is a date when it lost a precious gem. I hope we get him back.

It is better late than never so they say and today, with my humble name, I take a stand for Sir Michael “Xiao” Chua, an orgmate and a friend.

He is such a great professor, I know for a fact that he has a great passion for teaching and for our beloved country in general. Mr. Chua is the kind of educastor UP can't afford to lose. I won't mention HIS name here). Those are the types of professors we should push towards retirement!!!

(you don't mind if i comment here, do you? :s)

you have a point, i guess. but the thing is, i don't know why he got fired. i mean, that's what the whole truth-justice-transparency thing's about, right?

sure, he probably deserves better than a department that fired him without telling him why. but if we ask questions - if we want to know why, exactly - wouldn't that be because we haven't given up on the department?

i don't mean to pick a fight, by the way. i just think we all deserve better than this.

:)

oh well, i didn't intend to pick any fight either...
i just wanted people to speak up... antahimik kasi, puro testimonies lang... and i think i've done my job fairly well... if xiao still remembers, this is what i used to do with him... debate over almost anything that i want to debate on...

xiao has been more than a friend to me... he IS my brother in the university... he kept me sanely insane and appreciated me as me.. it saddens me to hear what happened to him...

i support your call, though there may be some points i may not entirely agree upon(pardon me for that)... ^_^

i was rather asking YOU the question:
"if the prof who got irrationally fired by the faculty was someone whom you least liked, would you have done the same?"

it is different from saying that if it was another prof. it would not have been the same.

i am inclined to agree that Xiao is a catalyst-type of person.. and that he is a good person who loved to do what he always does...and he's good at it... i used to envy him before...

and of course, i believe likewise that he did not deserve to be treated like this... but so far, i have not yet heard of the full story, and the reasons behind what happened with him... which suddenly reminded me.. do you even know why he was denied of his renewal? do you know what is inside this rabbit hole? do you where this end of the domino line started? i don't know...how about you?

He was never my prof, but I know for a fact that he LOVED teaching. You say, 'let's save him from the system! Let's FIRE him! The system is twisted and screwed and we can't do anything about that anymore!'

You say that had it been anyone else, it wouldn't have generated the same outrage.

I ask, if there was ever someone who deserved to be a catalyst for change, who believed in the UP student and his or her ability to change the world - wouldn't that be Sir Xiao?

It wouldn't be right to deprive students of his genius. Neither would it be right to deprive him of something he wants to do. Should we only consider that the students would feel that they were deprived?

Should we condemn the fact that the benefits go both ways? Should we forget that he likes what he does?

You ask what the search for truth and justice is about.

He, more than anyone, deserves his teaching post. Tell me, where's the truth and justice in irrationality? Where's the truth and justice in unjustified non-renewal?

Enraged? This is not just rage. This is an outrage. The search for transparency and truth and justice is not just a mask. It stems from the very, very simple fact that he did not deserve to get, as you put it, 'dumped by the department.'
lonermooneyes wrote on Mar 24, '08
haha... and you call for transparency etc.
let me ask you: why did you create this site in the first place? is it not because he got "dumped" by the department?

if he got his renewal would this site have still been created?

i feel that the complex issue you brought up would have remained hidden inside the walls of the faculty center if he had been given another term to teach in the university..

if it was some other prof that you least liked, would you have also tried to uncover why he/she has been kicked off the faculty?
let me qoute some of the things posted here...

hmm... ok... this is site is NOT about xiao...

"This is a site for family, friends, and students of Mr. Michael Charleston "XIAO" Briones Chua, whose application for renewal as instructor in the Department of History of the University of the Philippines Diliman was UNJUSTLY DENIED, WITHOUT JUST CAUSE NOR DUE PROCESS, and WITHOUT AN IOTA OF TRANSPARENCY AND DECORUM. truth and justice? about what?

as far as i can understand with what you wrote.. you are asking for the truth about his denied renewal application... more than anything... xiao believes you guys are serious...because you used "legal terms" 'daw'...

maybe you are...
maybe your just enraged by him getting fired out of the dept... and masked that by asking for transparency, etc.

oh.. don't worry yourselves much about my site's name... i never cared about what it meant anyway... i just never had the time to think of a new name..

good luck in whatever you want to happen...

wtf?!
